The most important thing to consider in this type of scenarios is the communication. A really useful tool that in my experience I can say it works is the uses of “work instructions” but separated on phases. It helps to the Wellsite manager to put the drilling or Workover programs in common terms for all the people on location, with specific roles and responsibilities for all the people involved in the specific phase to be phased out.

I been my entire life a Field Specialist, That´s mean that i been involved in a lot of kind of projects, with many people including Remote.ops eng. and i clearly can say that a good communication like the handovers (a call, mails, even chats) is a key and the other one Technollogy (Drilling programs, parameters software, etc) but those two cannot be possible without a good field specialist or the right person, someone that see what the people behind a desk or laptop cannot see.

Ensuring clear instructions at remote drilling sites requires a structured communication and monitoring approach. Implement real-time digital workflows using mobile apps to relay standardized procedures. Utilize IoT sensors and AI-driven dashboards to track adherence and flag deviations instantly. Implement AR-based remote assistance for troubleshooting. Conduct daily virtual briefings and reinforce key protocols through microlearning modules. Leverage automated checklists to confirm task completion. Deploy satellite-based connectivity for seamless data transmission. Finally, establish a feedback loop where field workers report challenges, ensuring continuous improvement.

Managing remote drilling sites demands precision communication. Success hinges on three critical factors: 📱 Redundant Systems: Deploy satellite communications, digital workflows, and backup channels that function in harsh environments. 📋 Standardized Protocols: Implement clear SOPs with visual aids and consistent terminology across all sites. ✅ Verification Loops: Require verbal confirmation of instructions and completion reports with timestamps. Morning toolbox meetings and competency verification programs ensure everyone understands daily objectives and safety protocols before execution. It is important to have a clear plan and a safety management ownership if the client does not present one. This is to make it clear that in the case of downhole collision or influx there is a written available on site monitoring and stop drilling decision flowchart based on change in drilling rate and or pump pressure changes. I have seen this used on a number of occasions and as a safety case analysis it works within the company's legal obligations.

If you're driving along highway 1 in Huntington Beach you see some remote drilling sites still in operation from years past. These sites have computer systems/programs providing data analytics to operations managers in offices located elsewhere. The tech itself often provides autonomy. Signs are put up for civilians walking or driving by. Protocols are places onsite for engineers and workers to abide by. Communication in all aspects from safety to operational processes is vital. Checklists are common. These guys periodically drive in and do routine site reviews. It's a pretty cool thing to watch. Clarity and direct instructions are typically best practices for best results. Great topic!
