The Supreme Court’s decision to allow the administration to effectively shut down the Department of Education is technically temporary. But the damage is done. We break down the Court’s use of the “shadow docket” and what this means in The Briefing, our free weekly newsletter: https://bit.ly/3GjiauG

We are a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice.
About us
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that works to reform, revitalize – and when necessary, defend – our country's systems of democracy and justice. At this critical moment, the Brennan Center is dedicated to protecting the rule of law and the values of Constitutional democracy. We focus on voting rights, campaign finance reform, ending mass incarceration, and preserving our liberties while also maintaining our national security. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting-edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

Great piece out yesterday by my colleagues Rachel Levinson-Waldman and Melanie Geller about recent concerning developments in the monitoring of immigrants' social media. They write that in April, an arm of DHS announced that it would begin screening many non-citizens’ social media for “antisemitic activity.” The guidelines received little attention, but could be used to suppress speech. https://lnkd.in/gHWaC5Zt

Five years after his passing, the impact of Representative John R. Lewis lives on. As we approach the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, we recognize Mr. Lewis’ incredible efforts in protecting and expanding voting rights for Black Americans. In the face of relentless attacks on these same rights today, we honor Mr. Lewis’ legacy by continuing his fight for justice and equality. LDF urges legislators to take meaningful action to protect voting rights for their constituents by passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA).
