Global selling was once for large companies only. Today, startups sell across borders from the start—our 2023 survey found 84% of businesses sold to more than one country. Yet global tax compliance remains complex. Selling in multiple countries—or even multiple US states—could result in hundreds of tax filings each year. And most countries require businesses to register before they can begin collecting taxes legally, but requirements for registration and collection vary. A local business in the United Kingdom doesn’t need to register until it reaches £90,000 in sales; but businesses in Spain need to register before selling anything. Last month, we launched registration and filing globally to make Stripe Tax a complete solution for businesses to register, calculate, collect, and file taxes.
