Building peace in the minds of women and men
About us
UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication are the means to a far more ambitious goal : to build peace in the minds of women and men.

Today on #UNESCOxPartners, let’s take a moment to highlight our valued partnership with Spain. This partnership has enabled UNESCO to provide ongoing support to Ukraine, notably through the creation of the L’viv Culture Hub – a space for cultural professionals, expert support, networking and mental well-being in challenging times. About the hub ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ecePf5a4 We also thank Spain for hosting the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, where UNESCO contributed, through policy briefs, side events and roundtables, on reforming the international financial architecture and financing the SDGs. Thanks to an initial $USD 1M contribution from #Brazil, UNESCO, the government of Brazil, and the United Nations launched the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change last year - a strategic effort to promote reliable, science-based information as a public good and to address the growing threats to the integrity of climate information. In a recent Member States and donor information meeting, strong support emerged for research and investigative journalism to protect information ecosystems and build momentum toward COP30: https://lnkd.in/gVPipi48 Brazil also supports UNESCO’s work within the country, including the reopening of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, the Futures of Education project, the Sustainable Ports Project, and the flagship “Criança Esperança” project. All this support makes the Brasilia office UNESCO's largest field office. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to informed societies, cultural heritage, sustainable development, and more. #UNESCOxPartners Comissão Nacional do Brasil para a UNESCO

How resource-efficient AI can drive a greener future Join us for an exclusive live interview with Leona Isabelle Verdadero, UNESCO Programme Specialist on Digital and AI Policies, as we unpack the latest findings from UNESCO-UCL’s groundbreaking report on resource-efficient #AI. Discover how the explosive growth of generative AI—especially large language models (LLMs)—is driving energy consumption and placing new strains on global water resources, as revealed by original experiments conducted by a team of computer scientists at UCL on a range of open-source LLMs. Learn how simple changes, like using shorter prompts and smaller, specialized AI models, can cut energy use without sacrificing performance. Hosted by Gabrielle Menezes, UNESCO's Chief of Digital Channels, we’ll discuss why a shift to “clean by design” AI is essential for environmental #Sustainability, digital inclusion, and equitable access worldwide. UNESCO and Canada are partnering to drive forward two impactful global initiatives : the Global Media Defence Fund (GMDF) and the International Program on Holocaust and Genocide Education (IPHGE). 🔹 Together we reinforce legal defence of journalists and tackle impunity through investigative journalism. As a founding donor of the Global Media Defence Fund, Canada has helped strengthen the legal protection and safety of up to 9,000 journalists to date. 🔹 The IPHGE fosters global awareness of Holocaust and genocide histories, deepening commitment to human rights and peace in 24 countries. With Canada’s contribution, UNESCO will expand the program’s reach. #SierraLeone 🇸🇱 has inscribed its first site on the #WorldHeritage List: Gola-Tiwai Complex. On this occasion, we spoke with Jiwoh Abdulai, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, who reflected on what this global recognition means for Sierra Leone and shared insights into the conservation efforts that made it possible. In recent years, UNESCO has been part of a broader push to strengthen Africa’s presence on World Heritage List, and highlight the continent’s rich history, diverse cultures and unique ecosystems. Are today’s youth ready for tomorrow’s jobs? On World Youth Skills Day 2025, we mark 10 years of global commitment to youth empowerment and 5 years of UNESCO’s Global Skills Academy, which has already helped millions gain access to the skills they need to succeed. Through over 230 partners in 150 countries, the Academy, via UNESCO and the UNEVOC Network, has supported 1.8 million young learners with digital, green and entrepreneurial skills tailored to local realities. As technology transforms the workplace — with nearly 40% of current skills becoming outdated and 22% of jobs set to change by 2030 — closing this gap is urgent. To rise to this challenge, UNESCO is launching the Skills for the Future Platform — a global hub powered by the Global Skills Academy and supported by KPMG International. The platform connects partners, strengthens TVET systems, and opens new pathways to inclusive, future-ready education — driving progress on SDG 4. Young people must not only take part in the digital age — they must lead it. Here’s how UNESCO is making that possible: https://shorturl.at/if63n #Education #RightToEducation #WorldYouthSkillsDay #YouthSkills #TVET
