Today is my first day as an Engineering Intern at the Dickinson ND Renewable Diesel Facility for Marathon Petroleum Corporation. Today, I’ve learned the basic chemical processes for synthesizing renewable diesel. Renewable diesel, which is not the same as bio-diesel, is chemically identical to traditional diesel, and is synthesized of from renewable feed stock, including seed oils (like corn, soy, or canola), and tallow. Since it’s the same as diesel made from fossil fuels, it can be ran by any diesel engine! Here are few key domains where we typically work; 1️⃣ Production Engineer Think of companies like IOCL, BASF, or RIL. As a production engineer, you’ll be in the middle of plant operations—ensuring everything runs smoothly, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing processes. Sometimes, you’ll even play a key role in scaling up operations or commissioning new units. 2️⃣ Process Design Engineer At L&T, Technip, or EIL, process design engineers focus on building the blueprint of plants. You'll work on P&IDs, simulate processes, and design everything from reactors to heat exchangers. It’s where technical skills meet innovation to bring ideas to life. 3️⃣ Business Development / Supply Chain Specialist Bridging the gap between technical expertise and business, this role involves strategizing, marketing, or optimizing supply chains. Whether you're planning workflows or being the go-to technical person in sales for companies like GAIL, Shell, or ExxonMobil, it’s a blend of engineering and business acumen. 4️⃣ R&D Engineer Into innovation? R&D might be your thing. Chemical engineers at P&G or Unilever work on new products, materials, and process optimizations. If you’re into material science or product development, this field rewards creativity and niche expertise. P.S. having a specialized masters degree usually helps in creating R&D a career path. 5️⃣ Licensing & Technology Specialist At companies like Honeywell UOP, Axens, or Lummus Technology, you’ll focus on scaling up processes, designing equipment, and transferring technology to production. It’s like bringing a process from the lab to life on an industrial scale. 6️⃣ EHS(Environmental-Hazard-Safety) Engineer Safety and sustainability? That’s the EHS engineer’s domain. You’ll ensure compliance, protect workers, and safeguard the environment. These roles are critical for sustainable operations in any company. Chemical engineers aren’t just limited to production or design. We also dive into scheduling, plant economics, and even equipment licensing. I realize it might strike some as odd, but every day I log on or walk into our team pod, I feel lucky and thankful to be part of the high-performing, hardworking, passionate, and fun-loving team tasked with making #Pacificorp the first entity to go live in the Extended Day-Ahead Market by May 2026. As my team frequently (and perhaps too often) hears me say, 'The question is not can it be done; But rather, if we had to do it, how would we and what would it take?' As we partner with the #CAISO, vendors, consultants, other utilities, and external stakeholders on the ever-growing list of issues, topics, and challenges that need to be tackled, we assess, listen, work out problems, innovate, adjust as needed, and keep moving. Nobody is pretending things will always be smooth or perfect BUT the team is committed to landing the plane and capturing significant financial and environmental benefits for our customers. As part of this commitment, I'm looking to add some #datascience talent to my current team who will become the founding members of their own larger data science team focused on markets, post go-live. Recent graduates welcome! You will spend the first few months on the job shadowing various teams to help you get a good understanding of utility operations, all while being part of our #EDAM team. While the ideal candidate has some experience in utilities or the energy sector, this is a dual posting for those with and without it. I recently had the opportunity to work with Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), where I explored various specialist groups, including pharmaceuticals, fluid separation, food, and renewable energy.
