Chatbots are our AI buddies for everyday questions. PlantGPT is our expert counterpart. The digital assistant helps employees in BASF production facilities work faster and more efficiently. It not only eases the daily operations in the control room but also assists the team in onboarding new colleagues quickly. AI does not take the wheel – it remains the co-pilot that supports us efficiently.
PlantGPT was developed by the team at the Acetylene Plant in Geismar, USA, in close collaboration with BASF’s digitalization experts from Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Madrid, Spain. This film, which was first shown at the BASF Annual General Meeting in 2025, provides insight into how colleagues work with it.

Quicker decisions.Quicker checklists. This is 21st century stuff.Okay? Its at your fingertips.Phenomenal! After I was comingto Geismar,I had alreadyplant experience. And I knewhow to work in aplant. And howto run a plant. Here, I had to doall this training again.PlantGPT is an AIchatbot, which issupporting each plantmember to getimmediately answers forall questions onecould have.Having this tool, where you can veryquickly ask: I only havethree pumps active insteadof four.Am I okay to keep runningthe plant inthese conditions? And in seconds youget that answer. Andyou get the procedureof Why and the reasoningof Why.Training time is still money. The knowledgebase of things thathappened in the pastis starting to dwindle.I wanted to capturethat for everybody.as long as this plant's here. This is like that one tool of tribalknowledge that willalways be embeddedin our plant. That wecould always reference to.At the very beginning, thetool was very basic, very slow. You always have thatthought in your mind like:Is this gonna work? But then you start toreally learn about it.See the potential of it.As we kept goingand progressed, you got to see itis actually learningand narrowing down theinformation we were looking for.AI should neverbe in a drivers seat.It should always be a co-pilot.Seeing things you may miss.BASF has been usingAI for a long time. But this is the first timethat we have usedthese new AI models.PlantGPT is like talkingto an expert in the plant. That technology hasenabled us to serve somethingthat is not yet coveredin our tool stack so far.Every second week, we doiteration steps togetherto improve the model into adirection where we need it.I think thecollaboration was good for BASF.I have never met Daniel or Javier, but I consider them friends. After the pilotimplementation in Geismar,in the Acetylene Plant, alot of plants were interested. So, we have a listof 140 that want tohave PlantGPT.Were in the firststage of testing the programto make sure that allthe information is correctbefore we roll it out to operators.Definitely, PlantGPTwill help the new operatorsto find a document andmake it easier for them.A software tool canincrease efficiencyand reliability of also older plantswithout doing huge investments. The impact for BASF is speed. It is a personal success for me.Been here since startup.I only have a couple of years left.Ill retire. So, when Im gone,at least I know theinformation that Ihad can be passed on.Probably the highlightof my career.
Incredible innovation! PlantGPT is a great example of how AI can enhance operations without replacing the human touch. Exciting to see BASF leading the way in smart, collaborative technology.
