In cyber security there are expressions CISOs often use to refer to regulations as: 1) Paper tigers - having neither the desired impact and/or not poised to be enforceable; and 2) Lagging and not applicable to criminals - cyber criminals do not wait for regulations to break, they are years ahead of them. If you are awaiting regs to guide your cyber program, you are too late. The below regulatory example is a classic example of both posits above being simultaneously true. Foreign adversaries (China, in particular) have been siphoning off Americans’ data at an alarming rate since the 2014 OPM breach. In 2024, there was a flurry of regulation aimed at guiding organisations to secure their data (personal or not) and digital systems. The cornerstone of these efforts was the NIS2 Directive and the Cyber Resilience Act! So we put together a mini-guide to navigate the rich and critical area of cybersecurity and the newly enacted Law 5160/2024, which incorporates EU Directive 2555/2022 (NIS 2 - Network and Information Security Directive) into Greek law. It also considers Cyber Resilience Act, which came into force last week and DORA for the financial sector. In Greece, it is estimated that NIS 2 will affect approximately 2,000 companies in public and private sector organisations - a significant increase compared to the approximately 70 organisations covered by NIS 1.
