Fractional Head of Product for marketplace startups

A healthy marketplace is about more than connecting supply and demand. In my time at 1stDibs, for example, they doubled down on making shipping a value to both buyers and sellers. Jewelry? Ships free. That one-of-a-kind chandelier? Insured to the 200th crystal and guaranteed to arrive safely, or your money back. I’m watching a few marketplaces that are building powerful moats in addition to traditional network effects: 📊 Baton: creates unprecedented data transparency for prospective small business buyers 🥗 Fay: data network effects give dietitians information to create better, more personalized recommendations 🔎 Bezel: every watch is authenticated by the best-of-the-best watch experts 🛟 Swimply: hosts can access comprehensive insurance coverage tailored for the sharing economy Any others to watch?

GOAT Group is one the sneakerhead community will be familiar with. Blew up during the pandemic when everyone was trying to avoid buying knock off jordans, but it continues to be an excellent marketplace.

Great insight and so true. Connecting supply and demand are table stakes. There has to be compelling value elsewhere. Also, Wasn’t aware of Baton, thanks for sharing them.
